File Types
Though you may typically only work with a handful of file types when editing documents, Ideagen Quality Management places no restrictions on the types of files that can be used in the system. Many Ideagen Quality Management users only work with Word, Excel, PDF, or HTML documents when using the system, and many tend to view the types of documents they're using in terms of the application they're using to edit or view them with.
File type is defined by a file's extension. These are the last few letters that come after the period at the end of the file name. For instance, Warehouse.docm is a Word file, Beaches.jpg is an image file, and Annual_Sales.xlsx is an Excel file. Because different file types have different rules associated with them for how they are edited and presented for viewing, Ideagen Quality Management requires that users follow basic rules when interacting with the various document-related pages so the system can properly handle the files.
Applications are the programs used to open the file for either viewing or editing. So, the Warehouse.docm file may open with Word, Beaches.jpg may open with an image viewer or your Ideagen Quality Management browser, and Annual_Sales.xlsx may open with Excel.
Note: Ideagen Quality Management uses the Windows default associations when determining which applications to use for which extension.
Many file types use the same application for viewing as they do for editing. But you may also convert many of these files to a PDF using Ideagen Quality Management's native PDF generator. The most common example of this is to have a .docm file that's editable in Word have its view extension be a .pdf that opens in Adobe Acrobat, so its clear readers are viewing a read-only version. editors can have a PDF be generated when creating the document or at any point during an Edit.
CAD files using the following features are not supported for PDF conversion:
- Shadows, lights, materials, additional cameras.
- No support for naturally flat entities mixed with 3D entities in the same drawing.
- No support for entities building like intersected entities and united entities.
See Environment Variables for further information on which file types to use if you're utilizing Ideagen Quality Management's automatic fields.
Note: Because editing web pages, or HTML-formatted files, is easier for most users when done in Word, we recommend maintaining your web page files in the .htm single-extension format but using Word as the editing program. See Editing HTML Documents in Word for instructions.
