Customers may encounter issues when trying to open a document in Word where an error occurs.
To make troubleshooting this issue easier to learn, this article is split into three sections so that you can either walk through the steps in sequence or you can jump to the section relevant to what you are finding:
1. Issue Experienced
This section will explain what occurs when the customer is experiencing the issue.
The customer will have noticed that when they try to open a document an error pops up that says, "Run-Time error 4248: This command is not available because no document is open." This happens when Word is trying to run the macro before opening the document. Environment variables will not update.
2. Resolution
This section will provide the resolution for the run time error.
A message should appear that asks whether the macro should be enabled. Selecting Enable should update the variables. Next, add the working folder to the trusted locations.
- Open Word to any document or a blank document.
- Go to File and Options.
- Select Trust Center and Trust Center Settings. Go to Trusted Locations (second option on the left-hand side).
- Click Add New Location (in the center of the pane towards the bottom).
- Select the Working Folder and click Ok.
