To make answering this question easier, this article is split into three sections so that you can either walk through the steps in sequence or you can jump to the section relevant to what you are looking for:
1. Question
What are the differences between Word extensions like .doc, .docx, and .docm?
2. Answer
Each extension indicates which version of Word the document was created in.
.doc files - created in Word versions 1997-2003.
.docx files - created in Word 2007, 2010 or 2013.
.docm files - indicate that they include extra functionality in the form of macros in Word 2007, 2010 or 2013.
Quote from a Word guru - "The essential difference between a .docx file and a .docm file is that a .docx file cannot contain macros when saved. You can, however run macros against them; you can even add a macro to a .docx file if you don't mind losing it upon closing the file."
